The most biodiverse rainforest we send guests to
Borneo is one of the great biodiversity hotspots on earth, and it is also the destination we sell more than any other. There is a reason for that. Nowhere else can a single itinerary deliver wild orangutans, Bornean pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys and clouded leopards, all within a handful of connected reserves in the Sabah state of Malaysia.
We have been sending guests into these forests for years, and we go ourselves before we send anyone else. That is not a marketing line. It is why we know which guide to request for a serious wild cat sighting, which room at which lodge actually faces the river, and which reserve to skip if your time is short. Borneo also happens to be an easy country to fall in love with. The locals are warm hosts, the food is genuinely good, and most of what we build here suits families with children and grandparents equally well.

Every serious Borneo itinerary is built from some combination of the following places. We know the access roads, the guides, the lodges and the seasons for all of them.
From Lahad Datu Airport, a two and a half hour four wheel drive leads into Danum Valley, a hundred and thirty million years of untouched primary rainforest. Borneo Rainforest Lodge is the only commercial resort inside its remote protected core, and often mistaken for a "Danum Valley Rainforest Lodge", a name that does not actually exist. For guests who want to go further, we also arrange stays at the research stations inside Danum Valley itself, working scientific outposts rather than resorts, for a genuinely different kind of access. The same airport also reaches Tabin Wildlife Reserve, the largest protected forest in all of Malaysia and home to its own mud volcano.
Between Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan sits Deramakot Forest Reserve, Borneo's best kept secret and, in recent years, its most talked about wildlife destination. Further north, Trusan Sugut is a former logging concession rebuilt into a Class I protection forest, remote and still almost unknown outside our own circuit, with a recovering banteng population and wild orangutan. From Sandakan itself, the Kinabatangan River offers the most accessible wildlife encounters in Borneo, best experienced over an overnight stay rather than a rushed day trip.

Danum Valley is not simply old forest. It is a hundred and thirty million years of continuous rainforest, untouched by logging or settlement, and the single most exclusive stay in our entire Borneo programme. Borneo Rainforest Lodge is the only property inside the reserve, reached by a two and a half hour four wheel drive transfer from Lahad Datu.
Guests here get private access to a suspended canopy walkway roughly three hundred metres long, eye level with hornbills and gibbons. Night walks reveal the Western tarsier, a small primate whose eyes rotate in a full circle like an owl's. We know this lodge as well as we know our own offices, we have stayed in every room category ourselves, and we can tell you honestly which one is worth the upgrade.

Borneo is booked more through us than any other destination we sell. That did not happen by accident, and it is worth explaining why, before you go looking elsewhere for the same trip.
We have actually been there
We have personally stayed at Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Sukau, Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort and every reserve on this page, in every room category worth mentioning. When we recommend a specific chalet over another, or tell you to skip a daytrip and stay overnight instead, that comes from having done it ourselves, not from a brochure.
The relationships are personal, not transactional
Our senior guides, the reservation managers at every lodge we work with, and the private transport operators who run the 4WD and boat transfers all know us directly. That relationship is what gets you the guide with the sharpest eye for a clouded leopard, or a room upgrade a stranger booking online would never see offered.
Nobody prices the same trip lower
For an identical property, an identical room category and an identical guided activity, we do not lose on price. If you have a quote from elsewhere for the same service at the same lodge, bring it to us before you book. We would rather match it than lose you to a booking platform with none of our local knowledge behind it.
Wildlife to cherish in Borneo
Our private Borneo wildlife safaris are built around three formats: night walks along the forest floor for tarsiers, flying lemurs and slow lorises, four wheel drive night safaris over unpaved forest tracks tracking clouded leopards, marbled cats and civets on the road and in the canopy, and night boat cruises along the Kinabatangan and Sukau rivers searching the banks for pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys and roosting hornbills. By day, the same reserves reveal wild orangutans and some of the rarest birds, reptiles and insects found anywhere in Malaysia.
Wild Orangutan
Not the semi habituated individuals of a rehabilitation centre. Deramakot and Danum Valley hold genuinely wild populations, nesting high in the canopy each night.
Bornean Pygmy Elephant
Smaller and gentler in temperament than mainland elephants. Kinabatangan is the most reliable place on earth to watch a herd cross the river.
Sunda Clouded Leopard
Asia's most elusive cat. Deramakot has recorded sightings more consistently than anywhere else in Borneo, almost always after dark.
Proboscis Monkey
Endemic to Borneo and unmistakable, with a pendulous nose found on no other primate. Common along the Kinabatangan's riverbanks at dusk.
Flat Headed Cat
One of the rarest and least photographed cats on earth. The Kinabatangan floodplain offers a genuine, if rare, chance at a sighting.
Sun Bear
The smallest bear species alive, and largely nocturnal. Danum Valley and Tabin both support healthy resident populations.
Western Tarsier
A palm sized primate whose eyes rotate a full circle, like an owl's. A night walk highlight at Danum Valley and Deramakot alike.
Binturong & Civets
The binturong, malayan civet, otter civet and banded civet round out Borneo's nocturnal mammal list, all regularly seen on a well guided night drive.

How to safari in Borneo
Borneo rewards patience more than speed. Matching the right format to the right reserve is what separates a memorable trip from a rushed one.
Night Drives
Four wheel drive vehicles with spotlights, scanning the forest edge for the reflected eyes of civets, leopard cats and, with patience, a clouded leopard.
Night Walks
On foot through the forest floor, close enough to hear the forest rather than drive through it. The best way to find a tarsier or a flying lemur.
River Cruises
Dawn, afternoon and night cruises along the Kinabatangan, each revealing a different set of species drawn to the water.
Jungle Treks
Guided walks through primary rainforest trails, with a naturalist who reads track, sign and alarm call as fluently as a language.
Canopy Walkway
Danum Valley's suspended walkway puts you at eye level with hornbills and gibbons, roughly twenty seven metres above the forest floor.

When to Visit
Borneo by season
Unlike an African safari, Borneo is a genuine year round destination. The rainforest is humid and green in every month, and the difference between seasons is one of comfort rather than whether wildlife is there at all.
The most favourable months for outdoor activity and river cruises, with the lowest chance of trails becoming slippery underfoot. This is when most guests choose to travel, and when we recommend booking lodges the furthest in advance.
The rainforest at its most lush, with frequent showers and noticeably fewer tourists. Wildlife does not disappear, it simply requires a guide who knows where to look. We also offer genuinely exclusive rates in these quieter months, worth asking us about directly.

Planning
How do I reach Borneo?
Fly into Kota Kinabalu or Sandakan via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, with direct connections also available from Jakarta, Manila and Hong Kong. Most of the wildlife we offer sits around Sandakan and Lahad Datu, and we arrange every onward road, boat or domestic flight transfer ourselves.
How many days is good to see Borneo?
Six days is enough for a focused Kinabatangan and Sepilok programme. Ten to fourteen days lets you properly combine Danum Valley, Deramakot and Kinabatangan without feeling rushed between transfers.
Can I customise my Borneo itinerary?
We do not sell fixed packages by default. A few sample itineraries are on this site for reference, but our actual process starts with listening to what you want to see, then designing the trip around that. Fill in our enquiry form and let a specialist take it from there.
What should I pack for a luxury Borneo tour?
Lightweight breathable clothing in neutral colours, long sleeves and trousers for jungle treks, comfortable walking shoes, a rain jacket, insect repellent and reef safe sunscreen. Bring a camera with at least 300mm of reach, binoculars, a headlamp and a power bank. Lodges provide the basics, so pack for comfort rather than volume.
What makes Borneo a unique destination for wildlife and nature tours?
Borneo is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world, featuring ancient rainforests, rare wildlife species like orangutans and pygmy elephants, and breathtaking landscapes. It’s also home to unique ecosystems, including mangroves, coral reefs, and highland cloud forests.
Is Borneo safe for tourists?
Yes. Sabah's reserves and lodges are well managed and explored with professional guides, and standard travel precautions apply as anywhere. Some coastal areas near the eastern seaboard carry a formal travel advisory, which is why we route our itineraries through well established, secured corridors and avoid isolated coastal travel after dark.
Can I combine wildlife tours with other activities in Borneo?
Yes, many itineraries combine wildlife exploration with cultural visits, beach relaxation, or adventure activities like canopy walks and mountain climbing. In Safari Acacia, we always listen to our guests and design the complete itinerary according to their preference.
In the Rainforest
Can I really see wild orangutans?
Yes. Wild, fully unhabituated orangutans are seen regularly in Deramakot, Kinabatangan and Danum Valley. Guests who also want a guaranteed sighting usually add Sepilok's rehabilitation centre, where a semi wild population is visible during feeding time.
Why is a good guide so important here?
Your guide is your access to the forest. A senior naturalist knows the terrain, the animals' movement patterns and are keen to share knowledge with our guests. This is precisely the relationship we have built over years, and why our guests see more than most.
How physically demanding are these tours?
River cruises and 4WD night drives are low effort and suit any fitness level. Jungle treks vary depending on the route your guide selects. We match the activity to your comfort level in advance, so tell us honestly what you are and are not up for. Private guide plays an important role here.
Do I need vaccinations or special preparations?
Consult a travel doctor about Hepatitis A, Typhoid and antimalarial precautions before you travel. Beyond that, pack breathable clothing, insect repellent and sturdy shoes, and you are well prepared for the field.
Can families with children or older guests visit?
Yes, and it is one of Borneo's real strengths. Most of what we build here suits both young children and grandparents. We do steer older guests toward the river chalets rather than the hill chalets at Tabin, and we recommend a private guide for families who want more flexibility.
What are the accommodations like on a luxury Borneo tour?
Accommodations typically include high-end eco-lodges, boutique resorts, and luxury rainforest chalets. Most of these resorts offer private suites with plunge pools, gourmet dining, and panoramic views of the jungle or ocean. The in-house private guides are knowledgeable and they are the best part of the Borneo Tour. The dietary requirements are respected on advance notice in every lodges. What activities can I do in a luxury Borneo Tour?
Visitors can enjoy 4WD game drives, night safaris, guided night walks, guided nature walks on forest trails early morning and in the evening, and bird watching.
