Downriver to Upriver, in One Itinerary
The journey opens downriver at Abai, where the Kinabatangan runs brackish beneath nipah palms and dense mangroves. This is where wild orangutans are most often seen at eye level, delicately plucking young palm shoots close to the water's surface, and where night walks along a private boardwalk reveal the forest's nocturnal side. Bornean elephant herds are seen in the nearby oxbow lake area.
From there, the route continues upriver to Sukau, where fig trees and denser jungle growth take over, hornbill sightings increase, and Bornean pygmy elephants are regularly found grazing the riverbanks on elephant grass. Orangutans are still present here, though typically seen higher in the canopy.

A private pickup from Sandakan Airport or Sandakan/Sepilok town around 11:15am takes you to the Sandakan Yacht Club jetty for the scheduled midday speedboat to Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort. After a buffet lunch and check-in, the afternoon cruise often extends rather than returning on schedule, running into a night cruise or night walk after dinner, depending on weather and animal movement. A light breakfast at 6am precedes the first morning cruise. In good conditions, your guide will favour the dark river, where resident orangutans often allow rare, eye-level photographs close to the water's surface. On overcast or rainy mornings, Oxbow Lake is the alternative. After breakfast, a morning cruise followed by couple of hours boat transfer through the Kinabatangan river takes you upriver to Sukau Rainforest Lodge, with wildlife sightings likely along the way. Check in over lunch, then set out on your first river safari, using eco-friendly outboard engines on the main river and electric motors in the smaller tributaries for quieter wildlife viewing. A sunset return leads into a candlelit buffet dinner overlooking the river, followed by a slideshow and interpretation from the lodge's naturalist guide. Night cruise is arranged. After a full breakfast back at the lodge, an educational walk along the Hornbill Boardwalk with the in-house naturalist follows, then time to relax, explore the boardwalk for orangutans, or swim in the lodge's pool. After breakfast, the journey back to Sandakan begins, by boat or overland. Depending on your onward plans, a visit to Rainforest Discovery Centre is arranged. This itinerary connects naturally to Lahad Datu for Danum Valley, Tabin or Sungai Kapur Reserve Forest, or can be reversed to start at Sukau and end the tour in Sandakan for an early flight. An additional stay at Sepilok or Sandakan is recommended for the conservation centres and the Rainforest Discovery Centre's productive night walks.

Wild Orangutan
Most reliably seen at eye level along Abai's dark river, feeding lower in the canopy than elsewhere on the Kinabatangan.
Proboscis Monkey

Bornean Pygmy Elephant
Herds graze the riverbanks around Sukau on elephant grass, one of the few places in Borneo to see them from the water.
Silvered Leaf Monkey
Silver grey troops with strikingly orange infants, a common sight along the riverbanks and forest edge.

Is this itinerary physically demanding?
No. This is a boat-based itinerary with very little walking beyond short boardwalks at each lodge, making it suitable for most fitness levels and a good option for families or older travellers.
What is the best time of year for this cruise?
The Kinabatangan is a year round destination. March to October is generally drier with lower, calmer water, while November to February brings more rain, higher water, and noticeably fewer fellow travellers. See the seasonal guide above for more detail.
Can this itinerary be reversed or extended?
Yes. The route can run Sukau first and Abai second, and connects naturally onward from Lahad Datu to Danum Valley, Tabin Wildlife Reserve or Sungai Kapur Reserve Forest. An additional night at Sepilok or Sandakan beforehand is also worth adding.
Do I need any vaccinations or malaria precautions?

What camera gear should I bring?
At least 300mm reach for wildlife on the riverbank and in the canopy. A semi pro zoom in the 150 to 600mm range covers most sightings well, and a body that handles higher ISO cleanly is worth having for night cruises.
Is a rain jacket necessary even outside the rainy season?
Yes. Short showers can arrive at any time of year on the Kinabatangan, and a lightweight raincoat with a dry bag for camera equipment is worth packing regardless of season.
