FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Tabin Wildlife Reserve is a protected area in Sabah, Malaysia, known for its rich biodiversity. It is home to endangered species like the Bornean pygmy elephant, orangutan, and Sumatran rhinoceros, as well as diverse plant life. Tabin is located in the eastern part of Sabah, about 48 km from Lahad Datu. It covers approximately 1,200 square kilometers of lowland rainforest and is one of the largest procted forest in Malaysia.

Tabin can be visited year-round, but the dry season (March to October) is ideal for trekking and wildlife spotting. However, the wet season (November to February) brings lush scenery and fewer crowds.

Yes, you can visit Tabin Wildlife Reserve during the rainy season from November to February. The wet season offers a unique experience as the rainforest becomes lush and vibrant, with the heightened activity of flora and fauna. Water levels in streams and rivers rise, making it an excellent time to observe the dynamic ecosystem. Birdwatching can also be particularly rewarding during this time, as many species are more active.

However, the rainy season does bring challenges like muddy trails and occasional downpours, which can make trekking more demanding. Be prepared with appropriate gear, such as waterproof footwear, a poncho or raincoat, and quick-drying clothing. Activities like night drives, wildlife safaris, and visits to the mud volcanoes typically remain available, though some treks may be adjusted depending on the weather.

If you’re ready to embrace the rainforest in its natural state, the rainy season is a fantastic time to visit Tabin.

It’s advisable to bring lightweight, long-sleeved clothing for protection against insects, poncho or rain jackets and rain protection for your camera gears, sturdy footwear for walking on trails, binoculars for wildlife viewing, and a good camera for photography. Don’t forget insect repellent, sunscreen, and a flashlight for night safaris.

Yes, good guide is your key to any forest in Borneo, and so in Tabin. You can go on a shared guided activity, however, for the best result we always recommend to have a private guide in Tabin with some additional charge.

No, a day trip to Tabin Wildlife Reserve is not possible practically due to its remote location, lack of public transport, and the time required to experience its activities. It is recommended to have atleast 300mm reach in all the destinations. If possible, a semi-pro level zoom lens like 150-600mm or 200-600mm with an additional 70-200mm will be perfect. For landscape, a 24-70mm will be handy. You will take most photos in low light, so a good iso, noise reduction, and fast lens will always be good.

Visitors can enjoy guided jungle treks, wildlife safaris, birdwatching, night drives, visits to mud volcanoes, and river excursions. The reserve is also ideal for photography and nature observation.
