How to reach Borneo Rainforest Lodge

Borneo Rainforest Lodge is positioned right beside the Danum River in the heart of Danum Valley Conservation Area. The rainforest is one of the world’s oldest and most biologically diverse ecosystems, dating back 130 million years. The nearest town of Borneo Rainforest Lodge is Lahad Datu which is accessible by bus from Kota Kinabalu, Semporna, Sandakan, and Tawau and MASWings operates daily flights from Kota Kinabalu. The 97-kilometer journey from Lahad Datu town to Danum Valley takes around two hours, with the first 15 kilometers on a sealed road along the Lahad Datu-Tawau highway and the next 82 kilometers on a gravel road to Borneo Rainforest Lodge.

Here is a 3 nights/4 days sample trip itinerary, which can be extended for more days according to your choice. 2 nights/ 3 days tour is also available.

We always recommend to do a Deramakot, Kinabatangan River Cruise and a Tabin Wildlife Reserve trips before or after Danum valley to get the complete flavor of Borneo.

From Lahad Datu 4WD transport will be arranged to take you to Danum Valley. Check-in to BRL and prepare for the nature activities like guided nature trails, canopy walk and the most interesting- Night Drive after dinner.

Wake up to the calls of the Bornean Gibbons and start your day with a guided trekking to the “View Point” and “Coffin Cliff (a Kadazandusun burial site). Take a short break by the Natural Jacuzzi pool for a refreshing dip before lunch at the Lodge. Afternoon optional activities: A Guided Jungle Trekking or if weather permits, Water Tubing session down he Danum River or at guest’s own leisure time. Guided Night Walk on the Nature Trail after dinner.

Trek up to “Fairy Falls” & “Serpent Falls” for a scenic view. Return to the Lodge for lunch. Afternoon optional activities: Guided Trekking along Segama River or at guest’s own leisure time.

An early morning walk and return to the Lodge for lunch before checking-out and transfer arrangement to Lahad Datu Airport for onward flights.

Rooms in Borneo Rainforest Lodge

Borneo Rainforest Lodge has several categories of rooms with varied level of comfort, luxury, facilities and decor according to guests’ budget. Standard jungle chalets, Deluxe chalets, Premium deluxe chalet and Premium villa of single and double storey are offered. Some of the rooms are facing the river and the rest are facing the forest.

Each room is equipped with its own Espresso coffee machine and complimentary soft drinks (premium rooms offer local beer cans) perfectly chilled in the mini fridge, drinking water is provided and refilled. More details about ROOMS can be found below.

Food and Dining in Borneo Rainforest Lodge

  • This is a bustling high-end lodge that welcomes guests from all over the world. Even the so-called standard accommodations in the lodge are of a very high grade. Obviously, the quality of the cuisine is really great, and there is a substantial selection available for each meal. The most vibrant flavors of Asian and Western cuisines are served, each of which makes superb use of local components in the preparation. A gastronomic adventure that may be had either indoor or outdoor in this Dramatic Ambience that is surrounded by the verdant foliage of a tropical jungle, which surely enhance the dining experience and taste of the food.
  • Special dietary requirements are catered, with advance request.
  • As of now, each TUESDAY and THURSDAY evening, all guests are offered an array of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and mouth-watering varied snacks in a get-together party. 
  • The outdoor meals can be arranged on request with additional charges, on the nature trail or by the river. Please tell your consultant if you like to experience it.

Wildlife seen around Borneo Rainforest Lodge

Borneo Rainforest Lodge is located in a biodiversity hotspot which is well renowned to intrepid travelers for its megafauna, including the endangered Orangutan, Gibbons, the Clouded Leopard, Borneon Pygmy Rlephants, Sun Bears, and a variety of other animals. Different wildlife can be seen both during the day and at night, therefore tourists are strongly encouraged to explore the rainforest at both times to maximize their wildlife experience.

Aside from that, Danum Valley is a popular destination for birders from all over the world. The Bornean Bristlehead, Bornean Ground-Cuckoo, Bulwer’s Pheasant, Black-throated Wren-Babbler, Dusky Munia, and many other endemic species can be found here!

Activities in Borneo Rainforest Lodge

The wildlife viewing activities are mixed, guided Trekking through several forest trails, exclusive Canopy Walkway, guided Night Walks, Night Game Drives in electric vehicles with special spotlight are offered on shared basis. Here in Safari Acacia we arrange private guides for our guests for a more enhanced experience of the rainforest and its inhabitants. The in house guides of Borneo Rainforest Lodge are quite knowledgeable and experienced, to say the least. However, for guests with special target wildlife, we also appoint licensed specialised guides.

  • The resort accepts Mastercard, Visa and card payment is preferred over cash payment.
  • Unfortunately, there is no wifi in the rooms yet. However, they are going to install it soon for every room. As of now, wifi is available in the lounge area.
  • There is in house laundry service.
  • Guests in the resort may need leech socks, and rubber boots. It can be either bought in the resort store. Otherwise we can arrange it, if requested in advance.
  • Candle-light dinner, bed decoration for honeymooners are delightfully arranged with advanced request.

The journey to BRL typically involves:

  • Flight: Fly into Lahad Datu Airport from Kota Kinabalu. We also arrange overland transfers from Sandakan, Tawau and Semporna.

  • Overland Transfer: A 2.5-hour drive from Lahad Datu to the lodge, with scheduled transfers provided by the lodge. This transfer is included in our package.

It’s recommended to take the early morning flight from Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu to align with the lodge’s transfer schedule.

It’s advisable to pack:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for humid conditions.

  • Good walking boots for jungle treks.

  • Raincoat and hat for weather variations.

  • Insect repellent, sunblock, and personal toiletries.

  • Binoculars and camera for wildlife observation.

Leech socks are recommended for jungle walks; you can buy from the lodge or we can arrange for our guests on advance request.

It is recommended to have atleast 300mm reach in all the destinations. If possible, a semi-pro level zoom lens like 150-600mm or 200-600mm with an additional 70-200mm will be perfect. For landscape, a 24-70mm will be handy. You will take most photos in low light, so a good iso, noise reduction, and fast lens will always be good.
