5D4N Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Sandakan and transfer to Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort. Extended Afternoon Cruise, Night Cruise, Night walk
  • Private Pick up from Sandakan Airport or Sandakan/ Sepilok Town around 11.15 am and drop to Sandakan Yacht Club Jetty.
  • Scheduled speedboat transfer at 12pm bring you to Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort, welcomed with cold towel and a refreshing drink.  After a buffet style lunch around 2 pm, check in to your spacious room and a cozy corner with large display of breathtaking rainforest view, balcony and an indoor+outdoor shower.
  • After snack/tea/coffee, venture into the afternoon cruise, may be extended instead of returning to resort and resume on a night cruise or night walk after dinner, depending on the weather and animal movement.

Note: A visit to the Orangutan and Sunbear Conservation Centre in Sepilok can be arranged from 9-11 am before the speedboat transfer.

  • A light Breakfast at 6am and you go on your first morning cruise. If the weather is favorable, we recommend an early exploration of the dark river, where resident orangutans often provide a rare opportunity to capture stunning, eye-level photographs close to the water’s surface. On overcast or rainy days, spotting them may be more challenging, so visiting Oxbow Lake might be a better alternative. Our experienced guide will assess the conditions and recent wildlife sightings to determine the best course for the morning adventure.
  • Return to Resort for Breakfast and you are free to explore the resort’s exclusive boardwalk which boasts a treasure trove of unique flora and fauna. Please do not get down to the forest floor from the boardwalk. Look out for interesting carnivore plants and varied epiphytes.
  • Lunch is served around 1.30 pm, followed by an afternoon tea-break around 4pm. You will then go for an afternoon cruise and return for dinner and overnight.

Note: We offer additional river cruise at an additional charge.

  • After a breakfast, we transfer you by boat to Sukau Rainforest Lodge. Wildlife encounter is anticipated on the way.
  • Upon arrival, enjoy a lunch as you check in, then relax with afternoon tea before embarking on your first river safari. The boats are equipped with eco-friendly outboard engines for use along the main river and electric motors for wildlife viewing in the smaller tributaries, where you’ll have the opportunity to spot wildlife and birds. After a sunset return, enjoy a hot shower with solar-heated water before a candlelit buffet dinner overlooking the river. The evening concludes with a slide show and interpretation by the lodge’s naturalist guide.

Note: Night River Cruises are highly recommended and available at the lodge for an additional charge.

  • An early wake-up call at 5:30 am invites you to experience the rainforest coming to life. After a light breakfast, embark on a morning river cruise to spot active wildlife and birds, heading towards the Kelenanap Ox-Bow lake.
  • Upon returning, enjoy a full breakfast, followed by an educational walking tour along the lodge’s Hornbill Boardwalk with the in-house naturalist.
  • After the tour, take some time to relax. Post-lunch, you can explore the boardwalk behind the lodge in hopes of spotting an orangutan, or enjoy a refreshing swim in the lodge’s pool.
  • After afternoon tea, venture out for another river safari in search of more wildlife, returning at sunset from your final cruise of the day.
  • After breakfast, begin your journey back to Sandakan by boat or overland. depending on your package.

This itinerary fits well if the guests continue to Lahad Datu to visit Danum Valley, Tabin Reserve or Sungai Kapur Reserve Forest. Otherwise, we can also reverse the itinerary and guests can stay in Sukau first and continue to Abai and eventually end the tour at Sandakan to take an early flight.

An additional stay at Sepilok/Sandakan is recommended to visit the Conservation Centres and Rainforest Discovery Centre. A guided night-walk and early morning nature walks there are very productive.

Customisations are available and always recommended before you book any tour with us.

What to Expect from Borneo River Safari

Explore the diverse Kinabatangan River ecosystem in our exclusive itinerary, from brackish mangroves to freshwater forests, encountering unique wildlife along the way. This experience offers an in-depth exploration of both the downriver and upriver sections.

  • Downriver – Abai Region

Your journey begins at the Sandakan jetty, where a speedboat will take you downstream to the Abai region. This area features a brackish water system, lined with majestic nipah palm trees and dense mangroves. The unique ecosystem supports a variety of wildlife, including estuarine crocodiles, proboscis monkeys, and an impressive array of bird species.

A highlight of this segment is the rare opportunity to observe orangutans at eye level, as they delicately pluck young palm shoots. As dusk settles, you will embark on a night walk along a private boardwalk, unveiling the elusive nocturnal wonders of the forest.

  • Upriver – Sukau Region

The journey continues upriver to the Sukau region, where the landscape shifts to accommodate more fig trees and denser jungle growth. This habitat is known for its increased sightings of hornbills and the Bornean pygmy elephant grazing on the riverbanks, feeding on the abundant elephant grass. Orangutans are also present in this part of the river, but are typically observed higher in the canopy.

Throughout the river safari, the gradual transition in flora and fauna provides a comprehensive understanding of how the ecosystem adapts to varying environmental factors. From the brackish waters and mangroves of Abai to the freshwater forests of Sukau, this immersive experience ensures unforgettable wildlife encounters and a deep appreciation for the natural wonders of the Kinabatangan River.
