Sipadan Kapalai Dive Resort
Celebes Sea · Malaysian Borneo
A water village with no land beneath it - wooden chalets on stilts over a shallow sandbank, minutes from Sipadan, one of the world's most celebrated dive sites, with a muck-diving reputation entirely its own.
Enquire about this LodgeWidely regarded as one of the finest dive bases in Borneo - and for over three decades, the water village of choice for divers heading to Sipadan. Kapalai has no island, no beach, and no shoreline of its own, just a sandbank, a reef, and a resort built entirely on stilts above it.
A Resort With No Land Beneath It
Sipadan Kapalai stands on stilts above a shallow sandbank and reef flat in the Celebes Sea, its walkways threading between chalets with reef fish visible just inches below. It has operated here for more than three decades, a short boat ride from Sipadan, ranked among the world's most celebrated dive sites since Jacques Cousteau first documented it.
Sipadan itself is a strictly permitted marine park under Sabah Parks, with entry limited to a fixed number of divers a day. Kapalai's own sand flats and reef have built a reputation of their own among underwater photographers, for muck diving and macro life found nowhere else nearby.

Sipadan by Day, Macro by Balcony
The dive centre runs three guided boat dives a day, with trips out to Sipadan itself (permit and park fees payable separately) and Kapalai's own celebrated muck sites in between. Guests with logged night dive experience can also dive, unguided, right off the resort's own jetty after dark.
Non-divers are just as well looked after: snorkelling straight off the dive centre jetty among resident turtles and reef fish, kayaking and cycling around the resort, and the sunset decks each evening. Safari Acacia guests enjoy snorkelling from boat at some other prominent coral sites.
What Moves Through These Waters
A macro-diving reputation built over three decades, beside one of the world's finest reefs.
The Water Chalet
Every room at Kapalai stands on stilts over the reef - twin-sharing, spacious, and with the sea moving beneath the floorboards.

Water Chalet
Roomy wooden chalets built entirely over the shallows, each with a huge private balcony, sundeck chairs, and an attached bathroom with hot shower. Turtles and reef fish are frequently spotted from your own balcony rail, morning and night.

A Day at Sipadan Kapalai
Three boat dives set the rhythm - and long, unhurried hours on the walkways between them.
First Light on the Walkways
An early stroll along the boardwalks at first light, the reef and its thousands of fish visible just inches below your feet.
The First Boat Dive
The first of three guided boat dives, whether a day trip out to Sipadan itself or one of Kapalai's own celebrated muck sites, with a guided snorkel available for non-divers.
Lunch, Then the Hammocks
Buffet lunch at the open, terraced restaurant overlooking the water, then quiet hours in the hammock lounge or on your own balcony through the warmest part of the day.
Sunset on the Deck, Dive After Dark
A second or third dive timed to the last light, then the sunset viewing decks for a drink, dinner, and for experienced divers, an optional unguided night dive off the resort's own jetty.
Before You Go
Tawau, then 90 minutes by road and sea
A short flight to Tawau, a road transfer to Semporna, and a covered speedboat to the resort. We recommend an early flight to make the midday boat.
Three boat dives daily, Sipadan permit extra
Diving is guided from the resort's own PADI dive centre. A Sipadan day permit, paid separately and limited by Sabah Parks, is required to dive the island itself.
Buffet meals and evening barbecues
All meals are included, served at the open, terraced restaurant overlooking the water, with regular barbecue nights. No outside food or drink is permitted at the resort.
A full resort experience above the surface
Snorkelling off the jetty, kayaking, cycling the boardwalks, and day trips to nearby islands such as Mabul - diver and non-diver packages can be mixed in one booking.
